With all the splendour glistening in a sweet-scented luxury store, doorman may not be a person you notice at all when you enter through those grand doors. However, they are a crucial element of the store, as they greet customers cordially and make them feel warmly welcomed to freely browse through the store.
I can usually step into most luxury stores no matter how frighteningly quiet the store is or how intimidating the sales are; but when it comes to Club Monaco, especially the store in Tsim Sha Tsui, I’m just slightly held back. Perhaps it is because of the name of the store, in particular, its reference to Monaco – the small sovereign city-state located in South Western Europe with an overflow of wealthy inhabitants – I always feel too ‘poor’ to go.
Well… When I was admiring its shimmering jewellery collection outside the display window today, wondering for the billionth time where on earth I could find my courage so that I could enter the store at my own risk, I was delightfully shocked when the doorman of that distinctively dynamic and international retail concept store practically invited me in through his warm-hearted smile, amiable body gesture and kind words. With his unusual affability, the ending of this blog post comes as no surprise: I betrayed my wallet.
For sure, he was happy to see the little bag I was swinging, when he bid me farewell and expressed his fondness to see me next time.
Well… It’s all karma, no?

Super Sonia Strikes H&M
After seeing Sonia Rykiel’s line for H&M in person, I am feeling a little bit confused right now. Perhaps it is because as I stepped out the door at home, extremely excited to see the fresh new arrivals, my loving mum reminded me once again that a pair of panties of that quality could be made at $USD 1.00. Arrrrgh… Thanks, Mum!
Well… If I neglect mum’s advice, I think the prices of Sonia Rykiel’s line for H&M are reasonable, because afterall it is evidently cheaper than the real line. Nonetheless, it’s still not to my wallet’s taste, especially the headband and the oversized brooch with the playful Rykiel big bow at respectfully $USD 34.95 and $USD 24.95. As expected, the store was flooded with people today. They all snapped a monstrous chunk of sexy bras and panties intimately in their arm. The favourite amongst the crowd was understandably the design with the colourful Rykiel signature stripes. With the armful of goodies, the girls found themselves stuck in a hideous queue outside the changeroom. Only a few dared to spend and went home with a tiny little Sonia Rykiel pour H&M bag. Well… It seems like no one was willing to go completely nuts for it.

Get Sexy in Sonia Rykiel!
Mark the Date! Sonia Rykiel for H&M’s lingerie collection is coming to stores worldwide on 5th December 2009. Ready or not, you know, it’s going to strike in style! So far from the pictures released, the collection seems to be playful and chic in the French label’s notorious ways! Although to me the girls in the campaign – Lara Stone, Anne Vyalitsyna and Caroline Trentini – looked out of place and not in sync with each other, I just love the way each girl looks so comfortable and at ease in it. That’s the way underwear should be, no? Body conscious, smart and sexy; Sonia Rykiel has it!

Anne Vyalitsyna is Princess Tam Tam!
I really like the colours in the lookbook images – it is fresh and seductive – two ingredients that we need for spring/summer’s sizzling formula. The Russian model Anne Vyalitsyna is also a great choice, because she is beautiful naturally and has a great healthy body (not sickly skinny at all) to naturally show off a collection that places its focus on nature with all its vibrant colours and abstract floral prints.

Kung Fu Panda (2008) and I
Can you believe what happened yesterday? I was in a bookstore and after flipping through Allure U.S. December 2008 (Covergirl: Actress Scarlett Johansson by Tom Munro) and Glamour Italia December 2008 (Covergirl: Russian model Anne Vyalitsyna by Fabio Chizzola), I came across the music and film section and I was immediately stopped and hypnotised by the action going on in the film “Kung Fu Panda” (2008) displayed on the large hi-resolution flat screen TV in the store. There was nothing else I could do to fight the irresistible temptation but to sit down submissively and watch the entire film as if under a powerful spell inable to be freed…

Glamour Italia October 2008 (Anne Vyalistyna by Fabio Chizzola) and Allure December 2008 (Scarjo by Tom Munro)
As the credit rolled in a continuous rhythm, I came back to my senses and realised that I behaved like one of those old man and little kids who hang outside the Fortress store [1] watching movies on the latest television built with a pack of hyper-high-tech features offered for sales whilst waiting for their wives or mums, who are conquering the other oh-so-gentle ladies/warriors in the changeroom or in a simulated field of war in the quest of hunting for the best bargins.
I am surely no kid anymore, so… have I grown into an old man?
Endnote:
[1] Fortress is a popular leading retailer of electrical appliances in Hong Kong with around 50 outlets (Statistic dated 2008) employing more than 1,000 staff. It is a part of the Hutchison Whampoa Group owned by Li Ka-shing.

Why I love: Ksenia Maximova?
There was a time when I was young when the name Ksenia Kahnovich was yet unknown. It was a time when the fashion crowd was first striked by an invasion of models from the Ex-Soviet Union ruling the runway like Ekaterina the Great once did. Victory did not come as a surprise to Anne Vyalitsyna, Eugenia Volodina and “Supernova” Natalia Vodianova who were known as the 3 musketeers from Russia. Here, from that exact era, sprung the beauty Ksenia Maximova. One of the reasons why I like the ex-Gucci rush girl is no doubt her fair looks and unique facial structures, which reminds me a bit of my friend Val’ya from Kyiv. I know liking someone because of their looks is an absolute lame reason to like someone, but today while reading an interview of her from FMD, I found a more concrete reason to like the Russian beauty: her strong work ethics, her down-to-earth attitude and her grounding. That all adds up to make her ultra special in the industry. Here is the interview:
Did you ever think you’d be doing this [modelling]?
Ksenia: No, not really. I was bullied so much at school, that I was sure I was ugly.
Have you encountered any surprises along the way?
Ksenia: Major one was probably the weird stereotypes people have of models and people from fashion industry.
Ever get tempted to get pulled into the party scene?
Ksenia: I used to party much more than I do now. I just got bored. I don’t have much time to see my friends, so I don’t see a point in going to a club, where you can’t even hear each other.
Have you developed any new interests since you started modeling?
Ksenia: Yes, a lot. But I started at 16, so it was probably a part of growing up. I’m interested in world music, psychology, cultural studies, filmmaking and art, but art was always my passion.
Do you have a mentor? Who? What is it about them that affects you? Why?
Ksenia: I used to, but he passed away last year. It was the man who discovered me and some other Russian models. He was a very strong person.
Where do you see yourself in ten years? What could be your next career?
Ksenia: I’m working on it now. I’m doing Art BA in London. Hopefully I can do illustration some day, or even publish a kid’s book. But I would like to move to a warmer place within next 10 years.
What are your best beauty secrets? How do you stay in shape?
Ksenia: Sleep well, eat healthy. Exercise. Everybody says it and it’s so easy, but people still fail to follow.
What would you want people to know about you?
Ksenia: I don’t know… that blonds are not necessarily stupid? I do get that a lot in university unfortunately…
Any advice for new models? What advice would you give other models starting out?
Ksenia: Not to forget that modelling is not forever. It hurts people a lot sometimes to come back to the other reality.
Favourite all-time model:
Ksenia: Polina Kouklina
Favourite quote:
Ksenia: “Until lions produce their own historian, the story of the hunt will always glorify the hunter.”
I’d like to meet:
Ksenia: Sigmund Freud, to smack him.
