When I first laid eyes on Arnsdorf show invitation, I knew precisely it would be something absolutely extraordinary and I was not wrong at all. Sleek, chic and extremely refined, beautiful girls with bright smiles showed off the Spring/Summer 2010/11 line entitled “Opticks” at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney. Designer Jade Sarita Arnott’s approach for the upcoming season focused upon the incredible idea of “reflection, refractions, inflections and colours of light”.
Evidently, this conceptual idea was worked most ingeniously by the New York-based designer, who presented a strong collection that exhibited remarkable femininity in a morning fresh way. The juxtaposition of the contrasting elements of the collection, like the mix of a pastel palette (nudes, caramel and lilac) with solid shades (espresso brown, military green and fire brick red), assisted to weave a story about a sophisticated woman of depth and aptitude.
Ms. Arnott used geometrical shapes to create understated optical effects that accentuates form and flatters the body in a frankly fantastic way. Collars stood firmly high up, while skirts, dresses and trousers were constructed with a billowing balloon shape around the hips that kinds of put me in a bubble of imagination as I dream about something utterly ethereal. There was one pair of trousers in dreamy lilac, which I loved in particular. On the front, the hem line on the legs was concave; on the back, convex. Shown on the runway with sky high heels by Aldo and a beautiful crop top with power puffed sleeves, the look is absolutely astonishingly amazing.
Shown towards the end of the show were magnificent marble-like kaleidoscopic prints – a result of the collaboration with graphics and print designer Roanne Adams. With its shattered glass-like appearance, this visually enchanting print fabricated some contrarily sharp and smart statement looks. Altogether, I think the collection as a whole fits the paradigm of feminism today – showcasing a wonderful wardrobe for discreet females of strength. The Opticks collection is certainly getting more than just a few ticks of approval from me and I just can’t wait to take that stunning shift dress with the hexagonal detail home.
