I swear, this blog post is long overdue and the reason is that I love it too much and was scare of ruining it! Well… Afterall, Viktor Horsting and Rolf Snoeren are my favorite designers.
In Viktor & Rolf’s recent Spring/Summer 2010 runway presentation, the delightful Dutch designer duo invited musical sensation Róisín Murphy to sing a hypnotic electronic soundtrack for the runway show – an incredible remix of Royalty and Demon Lover. Ms. Murphy’s powerful music not only invaded and pierced right through our minds to bring us live to the very core of Viktor & Rolf’s fantastic creative sphere, but also set a brilliant atmosphere all around for Viktor & Rolf’s dramatic and compelling show.
Naturally, the show would not be complete without its supporting cast. Polish model Magdalena Frackowiak, who once opened the avant-garde Dutch’s “No” Show for Fall/Winter 2008/09, once again graces the runway as first face. The striking beauty from Gdańsk stormed the runway and overwhelmed us with an intense wave of chilling exotism that seemed like an intoxicating evil cult from another dimension, as suggested by the lyrics from the sublime soundtrack. Although the mysterious beauty appears to be completely otherworldly, she shares one common attribute with other earthlings: her belief in love.
Consequently, romantic ruffles ruled wildly on the Viktor & Rolf runway. It decorated different outfits in all possible ways, creating eccentric shapes and a fresh new look for Spring/Summer 2010. I love the winged look as worn by Jamaican model Gaye MacDonald and Belarusian model Olga Sherer. In a way, it reminds me of a chirpy little bird that takes flight freely in the world away from rules and restrictions and I believe, that’s the essence of the look this season.
I also love the quirky cheese-holes inserted into the dress, which Kasia Struss wore on the runway. It looks like a mouse has eaten its way through the dress, drastically destroying the impeccable art piece; however, it is perhaps these clever flaws that create the flavour in Viktor & Rolf’s superb collection. Overall, I believe the collection could work great on the runway, off the runway and on the red carpet and off the red carpet. Some of the pieces are mighty amazing for the street, too! I myself cannot wait to get my hands on those trousers – the one with the floral-tattoos as worn by Russian model Eugenia Mandzhieva, Ms. Frackowiak’s grey trousers à la sporty and the super sparkly ones as worn by Belarusian model Marina Linchuk. Simply divine!
