I must admit: I was extremely surprised when I found out Hussein Chalayan’s collection this season did not contain any loud messages concerning mother earth. I guess if this collection was to visit that familiar ground in the same sort of explosive way as previously, it would seem tedious and tiring, so I am glad he took a break from that. Nonetheless, this collection is still a delight with a load of avant-garde trends that will surely become the heart of fashion’s ‘it’ trend next season.
The first thing I spotted from Hussein Chalayan’s Spring/Summer 2010 show was those beehive-shaped sunnies (also can be called Pentagonal sunnies). It is something that is definitely going to be major and I am so glad to see it, because I am so over those aviators shades, oversized sunnies, retro Lolita love-heart shaped sunnies and etc. This change for 2010 is certainly in time and most needed!
The pieces we saw towards the beginning of Hussein Chalayan’s spring/summer 2010 show had a stricter sense to it. Corporate jackets and vests were tailored to drop down to sit on the waist with the shapes of it exaggerated, creating an extremely graphic look that is so pioneering. With resort holidays in mind, the collection, then, progressively adopted a more relaxed attitude, bringing an abundance of white, navy blue, pinstriped prints onto the runway. This is naturally complimented by swimming caps and wide-brimmed sun hats on the models. The allure of the sun on the beach naturally brings along a quintessentially wicked temptation with sharp pointed folds on the chest and buttoned up skirts opening up as the sea breezes softly and gently - evoking a strong wave of erotic sexualism.
The eveningwear that followed is simply divine. Mixing shiny midnight blue with a clean preen palette of white to create some of the most regal evening looks. I love the Estonian model Kelli Lumi in a midnight blue cocktail dress with the “S”-shaped ruffle trim. It is modest, elegant and so bewitching. I also liked Mr. Chalayan’s white red-carpet dresses. Move over, lady in red! The lady in white is about to white out the red-carpet!
Environmentalism, I believe, is still in Mr. Chalayan’s mind [1], because the entire collection carries that sense of ease and nature. Namely, clothes have to match the place and occasion. Consequently, how can one enjoy this collection to Mr. Chalayan’s intended extent if nature is destroyed? His message this season maybe projected in a weaker volume, nonetheless, it’s heard!
Endnote:
[1] I am sure environmentalism will always be in Mr. Chalayan’s mind.
