I had been thinking about Gucci’s Spring/Summer 2010 show for a week now. Surely, a show, with such a different approach, style and look as what creative designer Frida Giannini had been doing for her previously collections at the fabulous Italian fashion house, really needs some digesting. After further consideration, I came to the final conclusion that I like it. It’s fresh! It’s sleek! It’s sexy! Still super Gucci! Still super Frida! Still super Great!

What is usual about this Gucci show is that all of Ms. Giannini’s (and my personal) favorite Gucci girls, like Natasha Poly, Anja Rubik, Freja Beha Erichsen, Abbey Lee Kershaw and etc. all gathered for the show. The new blood this season includes the doll-like Brit Imogen Morris Clarke, All-American Jacquelyn Jablonski and the delightful Dutch Bregje Heinen. Together they all presented a show that was full of Ms. Giannini’s trademarks yet infused with refreshing and pulsating new elements. “Alright! All white!” looks are something that Ms. Giannini always works on for spring/summer. This season, she presented another fresh wave of these; but spiced it up by impregnating sportswear into corporate looks - creating something that is so so so super smart, sleek, sophisticated and sensual.

Tight sportswear-inspired pants looks perfect whether worn with a sports mesh top (as worn by Freja below) or an embellished top with harness as halter-neck shoulder straps (as worn by Yulia below). The look is definitely less rock ‘n’ roll as what Ms. Giannini did for her previous collections, but it’s still as strong as those collections with a super fierce statement beneath those looks.

What is most surprising about this particular Gucci collection is that it does not work on what Ms. Giannini is most known for: boho and folkloric style with her signature floral prints; but rather it builds onto a new element: an urban tribal fever with a new digitised ikat print. For me, these are just a perfect installation for the new collection, because after all, one must experiment with different things in life and not spend a life long walk to the same exact spot. For taking that step forward, I am commendating Ms. Giannini. Moreover, I like how she morphs that printed pattern into pretty and tough embelishments on the dresses. It’s simply beyond smart!

On the whole, Frida Giannini has maintained that classic Gucci touch and some of her trademarks in Gucci’s Spring/Summer 2010 collection, yet she also introduced some fresh elements to the collection. It is the perfect balance between classic and modern, tough and sensual, sporty and elegant! Surely, Gucci’s core customers will find this collection a delight!
