“We went on a voyage, darling!” exclaimed the bold and extravagant Stylist Catherine Baba. “We were in Bali. We were in India. We were everywhere!” Well… What are we waiting for? Let’s hop on the style wagon and join Belgian designer Dries Van Noten for an unforgettable journey to South East Asia in refined style!
For Spring/Summer 2010, Dries van Noten’s inspiration hailed from exactly half way across the globe in South East Asia. It brings along a tropical breeze of eccentric ethnicity and a uniquely one of a kind style onto the runway in Paris. The brilliant Belgian designer explained that it felt just right to return to South East Asia for 2010, as its authenticity creates a wave of freshness and a conspicuously modern touch.
By authenticity, Mr. Van Noten meant the casual and down to earth quality of the ethnical elements. Nonetheless, with the elaborate research conducted on fabrics and prints, it is evident that the collection retained a luxurious look to it that makes it fit perfectly in high fashion. As a whole, the collection is rich and lavish with an amazing assortment of incredible ikat prints on stunning sarong kebaya and a dash of metallics to highlight the precious value of the collection.
The most delightful element from the show, I find, is the brilliant use of colours of the sun. In fact, Mr. Van Noten cited the essence of this particular collection is indeed the joyful attitude, which the clothes emit, like an illuminance of positivity to be strong and to be now amidst the difficulties in life. Truly, I find this act, which appears to be pieced together so simply on the surface, infectious!
The only one thing, which I felt could have made the show better, is the choice of music. Although Max Berlin’s musical composition of Elle et moi creates the perfect beat for non-chalant chic, we have heard it a million times on the runway – most notably at Versace Uomo Fall/Winter 2008/09 and Chanel. It would certainly not hurt to experiment with something new and refreshing. Nonetheless, this is still a rapturous collection in my book and I cannot wait to see stylist and photographers working different angles of these looks to create something even more explosive!
