When one ponders upon the label “Jonathan Saunders“, one always think of those awestriking print and patternwork distinctively of his. For Spring/Summer 2010, it seems like the CSM Graduate has a different approach than previously. Rather than focusing on bold and daring prints, subdued minimalism become the highlight of this season, creating an unbelievably light, extraordinarily clean and sensationally sleek collection.
The Scottish-born print designer explained that this season’s inspirations are “the color in the Swedish vampire movie ‘Låt den rätte komma in / Let the Right One In‘ (2008); the materials, plastics, and packaging of pharmaceuticals; as well as the purity of early-nineties minimalist fashion photography” [1]. This translates as an array of disturbing yet highly captivating looks on the runway. White and frosted pastels, therefore, become the perfect palette for the Glasgowian designer to work on, as it adds a pleasant touch of sanitised purity. He then embellished his collection with light sheer organza and eccentric rectangular shapes in order to sharpen that sense of crisp frailness. Fine, fresh yet fragile looking nymphets, thus, become the perfect faces to compliment this delicately charming collection.
Mr. Saunders’ stunning collection not only offers exquisite dresses, but also smart coats and remarkable red-carpet looks for his eccentric, individualistic and artistic women. The most mouth-dropping look for me was the lovely Slovenian newcomer, Valerija Kelava, in a long heavenly-white dress with ruffled layers of light organza. As the bewitching dark-haired beauty with her deadly gaze and poisonous-red down-turned lips walked down the runway, one could truly understand the complete meaning of the expression “drop dead gorgeous”.
Mr. Saunders’ modern collection offers a real edge for 2010. Surely, his move back from New York to London proves to be a wise action. Well… After all, the long awaited moment has arrived: US Vogue Editor in Chief Anna Wintour was finally present at London Fashion Week. With Mr. Saunders’ show as one of the highlight of the season, this officially establishes the metropolitan city of London as a fashion capital as well as Mr. Saunders’ place in the turbulent global market.
