Michael Kors, the American designer, whose part time occupation as judge on the American hit reality TV Show “Project Runway” has boosted his status globally and consequently earned him a title amongst the idolised gang of superstars on the silver screen. Whilst all things concerning popularity may appear truly dazzling for Mr. Kors, I am not completely sure if his fall/winter 2009/10 collection, shown February 18 this year, was a fair portrayal of his work, which exhibits his eligibility as a role model for young aspiring designers.
In terms of design and construction, the show undeniably crossed path with the hottest European brand names of the moment and to a far extent, it almost seemed like the looks were shipped exactly as they were directly to New York for this special occasion.
The sculpted black dresses with sharp slits cut sky-high up the thigh was indisputably very Balenciaga with unquestionably reminiscent traits from the fall/winter 2008/09 collection. This resemblance becomes especially manifest when worn by the Russian model Natasha Poly on the Kors runway, who made a remarkable entrance at the runway presentation for the adored Parisian fashion house in a similar dress last year.
Moreover, the presence of origami-inspired shapes as well as the streamlined asymmetrical tailoring, which were respectively the predominant looks from the house of Jil Sander and Lanvin from last season, stimulates the thought that the Kors’ collection as merely a cunning remix of current trends and creates the image of a lazy effortless collection.
What Kors did infuse into this collection from his own creative shelf was a strong hint of spices, as his signature upbeat vivacity shines even several galaxies away. This time in razor-sharp yellow, hi-visibility orange, neon green and fuchsia pink. Utterly, this made a whopping splash on the bombastic fur jackets by giving it an irrefutable Kors edge.
Chunky bedazzled metallic chains were decorated around the necks of the models to add a light of shimmer to the simple black dresses. Utterly, this is an exceptional display of luxury and optimism amongst such times of desperation.
“Who cares about it being a total rip off of Balenciaga, Lanvin and Jil Sander?”, my friend Katya says teasingly, “Customers will just go crazy for its fabulous gorgeousness and oh… the price!”
Ruthless business techniques perhaps do not translate directly to go correspondingly delightfully with originality and creativity, as the above two terms had been destined to head straight to sacrifice one self under mass murder since the commencement of this war against recession. Ultimately, this results in the death of the two things, which we love the most in fashion by declaring them as terms, which cease to exist in this territory.
Perhaps television is not only lies and junks after all. America is going through the apex of a recession that had not been experienced in almost a century and yes, it’s survival of the fittest!
