Estonia is a little Baltic country with a population of approximately 1,3 million [2007 statistics]. With a percentage of 68.8% being Estonian, this equates to approximately 920,000. Supposedly half of the population is female and that 1% of that number has the right looks and the right body shape and height to be a model (I heard the percentage is actually higher) and 10% of that is in the age range of 15-25 and another 5% of that has authorisation from their parents to be models and that 20% of that has the appropriate persistance, diligence and attitude to become runway sensations, this corresponds to just 4.6 Estonian girls. Rounding this up, the final number is circa 5, which I find is roughly the correct number of true blue successful Estonian models: Anett Griffel, Carmen Kass, Hedvig Marie Maigre, Karmen Pedaru and Tiiu Kuik.
Hence, Estonian models are, in a way, a rare species in the modelling industry.
Out of these super five, Carmen Kass continues to lead the way by rocking the runway. Here are her appearances for the Fall/Winter Ready-to-wear 2009/10 show season:
- New York: 18/2/09 Michael Kors – opened and 3 entrances.
- Paris: 6/3/09 Isabel Marant – 2 entrances.
